What Would Happen If We Drink Too Many Soft Drinks?

by Aaron Chan Lok Him from 5B

Drinking soft drinks like Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Fanta will actually make you happy for a while! It is because they contain a great amount of sugar and caffeine. However, after a while, you will be more tired than before.

I like Coca-Cola and Sprite. Many people like them too! And many people drink a lot of soft drinks, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Drinking too many soft drinks will harm your oral health

Soft drinks have different kinds of acids. Acid will harm the enamel (the "protector” of your teeth). Unlike hair, enamel can't grow back. So if you lose it, you will get cavities easily. And you will need money to visit the dentist.

Sometimes you get cavities and you don’t notice it; the tooth decay will spread within your mouth and you could get periodontal diseases.

If your oral health is bad, your mum may punish you or even ban you from drinking soft drinks. You may be sad after that.

Drinking too many soft drinks will increase your weight slowly

Soft drinks have a lot of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body to store energy. After you eat (especially carbohydrates), insulin will increase so your cells can take sugar in your blood, store it as glycogen in your liver and muscle and store fat in the adipose tissue when there is extra energy.

When more glucose goes into cells, glucose is stored rather than used; insulin will promote fat storage when energy is in excess, insulin will help the body to convert some of that energy to fat, and you will be overweight after that.

If you are overweight, some rude classmates may laugh at you, and you will be ultra sad.

Drinking too many soft drinks will increase the chance of getting heart disease

Most of the soft drinks have about 10-12 teaspoons of sugar per can, which is 3-4 bowls of colourful sweet cereals. The sugar will cause your blood sugar to skyrocket and increase the chance of getting heart disease.

If your body has too much sugar, your blood vessels may turn stiff and narrow. When your vessels are tight, your heart will need to pump harder to move blood around your body. This will cause high blood pressure, which is bad for your heart.

If you have heart diseases, you may feel tired, have pain or tightness in your chest, feel out of breath, feel sick sometimes or even lead to a heart attack or make your legs swell.

Next time your parents or the dentist tells you to drink fewer soft drinks, do not ignore them because you may die if you keep drinking soft drinks every day.
