Watermelons = AWESOME
by Samuel Cheng (4F)
A lot of people like watermelons for obvious reasons: they are cool and yummy as a start! I like to eat them whenever I can but particularly in summer when it’s hot and I need to cool down.
Here are 5 of my favourite fun facts about watermelons:
- Watermelon contains 6% sugar.- But the sugar is natural, so it’s not that bad. Just make sure you don’t eat the whole thing at once!
- The heaviest watermelon weighed 350.5 lbs and was grown in 2013.- Some watermelons are ginormous! This one was a monster. I bet it took a whole class to eat it.
- There are over 1,200 types of watermelons.- We’re all familiar with red watermelons. But did you know there is more than one type?
- Watermelons are made up of 92% water.- Watermelons are very watery (duh!). They melt in your mouth and can be very refreshing.
- All of the watermelon (including the rind) can be eaten.- Although most of us don’t eat the rind, the entire watermelon can be digested in our stomach — even the seeds!
Watermelons have lots of vitamins, like Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C. These help your skin stay soft and smooth.
A fun fact is watermelons are originally from Africa. But nowadays, almost every country — including Turkey and China — grow watermelons. I want to try one from each continent!
