1. Shiokara

Shiokara is a Japanese delicacy made from salted and fermented innards from different marine animals. Shiokara has a strong and pungent smell, often being described as slimy and disgusting. However, from my point of view, it is a unique dish that is absolutely worth a try.

2. Ochauke

Ochauke is a simple and traditional Japanese comfort food. It is a special dish mixed with hot green tea, Japanese soup stock and a bowl of warm rice. Not only is this dish easy to make, it is also a healthy dish to eat when you are feeling under the weather or hungover.

3. Daigakuimo

Daigakuimo is one of the most mouthwatering Japanese desserts that I have heard about. It is a delicious snack consisting of chunks of fried sweet potatoes, coated in glossy hard candy like syrup, enhancing the overall flavour. Other than the taste, Daigakuimo also has a really unique name that is challenging to pronounce. Due to the fame and popularity that Daikuimo has spread among Japanese university students, it is actually directly translated as “University potatoes” , making it one of the most commonly seen snacks in Japanese campuses. In my opinion, I think that Daigakuimo is the perfect snack that can be shared between a few.

4. Basashi

Basashi is a dish of thinly cut raw horse meat. It is usually served with condiments like soy sauce and garlic oil. Despite its unappetizing outlook, it is actually a really nutritious and healthy dish that enhances our health. Basashi contains rich vitamins, helping us boost our immune system. In conclusion, Basashi is an excellent choice of cuisine with an exquisite taste.

5. Chawanmushi

Last but not least, Chawanmushi is a delicate and savoury egg custard dish that is often paired with ingredients like shrimp, chicken or mushrooms. Unlike the usual japanese eggs, Chawanmushi has a unique taste and texture, making the whole experience everlasting.
