Kester's Behaviour

This story was written over 5 weeks as the final project for the first-year Creative Writing students. It’s their first attempt at writing a short story on their own, combining all the skills they’ve learned through the year.

“Hey! Stop running!” shouted Jasper. Jasper was a class monitor. He paid so much attention to class. He answered every lesson actively.

Jasper helps to clean up the classroom after school everyday.  When his class  goes into the classroom every morning it is so clean.

He always got full marks in exams and tests. All the teachers like him so much.

One time at the first recess, “Are you blind? Can’t you see my school bag? Stop stepping on my bag!” said Kester to Alvin. Alvin was shaking and replied, ”Sorry sorry, that’s my fault. I don't mean it. I promise I won't be that careless again.”

“You better be!”said Kester again. Jasper heard Kester say that when he passed by, he thought Kester was so impolite.

The first day Jasper and Kester sat together, Kester pranked Jasper first. He put a fake cockroach on his desk. Jasper saw that and shouted, “Oh my god! What is this?” Kester laughed at Jasper. Jasper was very embarrassed as he shouted loudly.

Jasper told Kester, “Pranking classmates is really inappropriate, please stop pranking others.” However, Kester didn’t care and kept being impolite.

Kester tried to persuade Jasper to prank others together. Kester said, “You could find happiness when he sees others flustered. You will definitely enjoy that moment! It just feels like you achieved something.”

Jasper’s stance began to waver, he asked in a hesitant voice, ”Really?”

Kester told him, ”Don’t hesitate. Just go on. Watch and learn!”

After this, Kester went to their classmate Ash and stuck a note that had written ”Ash the piggy” on his back. These Three  Words. Everyone passing by Ash were all laughing at him. “See, we all find happiness from this way. Just follow me!”

At this time, Jasper suddenly remembered something. “Folly brings joy to one who has no sense, but whoever has understanding keeps a straight course." A quote from the Bible, he knew that he shouldn’t prank others and went to find the teacher Miss Lam to talk about Kester’s behaviour.

Miss Lam scolded Kester again, but he didn't care and refused to change, his only goal was making Jasper prank others together.

Jasper rolled his eyes when he saw Kester again, Kester said, ”It’s okay. I know that you don’t trust me, but follow me to a place after school. I will show you something cool.

Ling! The school bell rang. Kester pulled Jasper to a small place in the street, ”See! The schoolmate that you may know at school.

“These are the F.3 students. They taught me to earn money by extorting money from others.” He pointed to the box of cash and the paper plan and the earning’s report

Jasper was very shocked looking at the earnings report, “3700 dollars in a week!?”

Kester nodded, wishing that he would join.

Kester knew that Jasper’s family was very poor and his mother was sick so he really needed money right now. Jasper didn’t buy snacks for a few weeks already since her mother was sick. He finishes lunch at school everyday and only eats bread and cup noodles for dinner. He even won’t eat anything for breakfast and dinner!

Jasper thought it was a difficult decision for him, but of course, Jasper was a good monitor, so he won’t bully other classmates.

Kester said to Alex, ”Give me all your money or else I will tell the teacher that you forgot to do homework and didn’t tell her.” Kester is trying to earn money by blackmailing others.Jasper heard it when Kester is going home in the hallway at school.

Jasper thought that was a serious problem, and told Miss Lam about the students at school blackmailing the other students.

“This was as  serious a problem as bullying that might lead the victim to get depression or even more serious sickness,”said Jasper to Miss Lam.

“Yeah, this thing is getting serious. Kester is becoming naughty and naughtier. We must stop him.” said Miss Lam with a serious face.

Jasper and Miss Lam were thinking of some solution to let Kester stop.” I know! Let’s call Kester’s dad to come to school to talk with the principal as Kester told me that he’s really scared of his dad,if his dad punishes him, he might stop.” Jasper suggested, and said, “And I can inquire what plan Kester does have, just like an undercover. After I inquire about Kester's plan, then we will call his parents.”

Miss Lam said, ”That’s a great idea! Okay let’s start our mystery plan.”

“You went to find the teacher again? Don’t tell me that you reported me because of the blackmail thing,” said Kester.

”No, I’m just asking some math questions that I don't know.” Jasper lied to Kester as he had to continue the plan and said, “Anyways, I think I will earn money with you. Can you tell me the whole plan please?”

Kester was so surprised and said, ”Sure! Of course!” Jasper took out a pen and a paper, ”Why do you need a pen and a paper?” asked Kester.

Jasper said  he needed to write down the notes so he could earn money much easier. Kester gave Jasper a notebook full of the notes and plans and said, “Just take away all the notes that are in here, or actually you can just read the notes by yourself because I have to go home early today.”

Jasper nodded and thanked him immediately and thought he could just go to find the teacher now as he got all the plans. He went to find the teacher with the notebook after taking the booklet.

Miss Lam asked Kester’s parents to go to the school to have a talk about Kester.Kester’s parents came out from the office and scolded him angrily when they were on the way back home.

After Kester’s parents punished and scolded him. He knew that he shouldn’t be such a bad child. He didn’t bully or prank others again. Kester is also learning to be a good student now.

A few months later, the teacher chose Kester to be the new monitor. Although Jasper isn’t a monitor now,  he was also very proud of Kester.

Jasper walked next to Kester, tapped his shoulders and said, ”You did a great job, I hope you can be a good monitor!”

Kester smiled and said, “Thanks for helping me  these past few months. You let me understand  the importance of being a good student.”
